Introduction | Hedera helix (common ivy, English ivy, European ivy, or just ivy) is a flowering plant in the Araliaceae family that is endemic to most of Europe and western Asia. It is a rampant, clinging evergreen vine that can be found in gardens, waste areas, on house walls, tree trunks, and in wild regions throughout its native range. Cough medications now use ivy extracts. Historically, the leaves and berries were used as an expectorant to cure cough and bronchitis. The British herbalist John Gerard advocated ivy-infused water as a treatment for painful or watery eyes in 1597. |
