What is huperzine A

Huperzine A comes from Huperzia serrata. Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trev, It is also known as the Millennium Pagoda. It is a perennial fern of Huperiaceae, Huperzia Bernh. and Sect serrate ea (Rothm.) Holub.

It is a natural new effective monomer of lycopodium alkaloids isolated from the genus Huperzia of Huperziaceae in China. Its chemical name is (5R, 9R, 11E) 5-amino-11-ethylide-5,6,9,10-tetrahydro-7-methyl-5,9-methylcyclooctano (6) pyridine-2 (1H) one. The molecular formula is C ₁₁₁₁₈₈₈₈₈₈₁₁₁₁₁₁₁₁₈₈. Yellowish crystalline powder, almost insoluble in water. At present, huperzine A has been found to have a certain effect on Alzheimer's disease.
