U.S. Expand the Scope of Spirulina Extract as Colorant
July 3, 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration issued 82 FR 30731 and revised 21 CFR 73 part about expanding the scope of Spirulina extract to be used in dyeing eggshell and setting the dosage conform to the good manufacturing practices.
The revised regulations are as follows: Spirulina extract can be used as a safe colorant for candy (including chewing gum), frosting, ice cream and frozen desserts, dessert coating and decorative ingredients, blend and powder drink, yogurt, bavaroise, pudding, cheese, gelatin, bread, ready-to-eat cereal (excluding puffed grain), coating formula applied in dietary supplement tablet and capsule, and also dyeing eggshell. The dosage is required to meet good manufacturing practices. But it can not be used for standard products specified in Section 401 of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
