Principal components
Chlorogenic acid, sometimes referred to as caffeic tannic acid and a depsipeptide produced from eafeic acid and quinic acid, is the primary component of Lonicera japonica extract. It is a member of the phenylpropanoid class of chemicals. Widely abundant in plants and concentrated in flowers of Eucommia ulmoides, CGA is a phenylpropanoid synthesized by the plant body through the shikimate pathway during aerobic respiration. It has a wide spectrum of pharmacological effects.
Although chlorogenic acid has numerous antibacterial properties, in vivo, proteins render it inactive. When given orally or intraperitoneally to rats, it enhances cerebral excitability similarly to caffeic acid. increases the tension in the rat uterus and small intestine motility in rats and mice. improves bile secretion in rats and has a choleretic effect. People can become more sensitive to it, wheezing, and dermatitis can develop after breathing in plant dust containing this substance.
