CAS No. 70-18-8
Constitutional Formula C10H17N3O6S
introduction Glutathione (GSH) is an essential antioxidant found in plants, mammals, fungi, and some bacteria and archaea that protects critical cellular components against reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.[2] It is a tripeptide with a gamma peptide linkage between the carboxyl group of the glutamate side-chain and the amine group of cysteine (which is related to a glycine via a normal peptide linkage).
Indications and Uses

1 Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide with a unique peptide linkage between the amine group of cysteine (which is normally coupled to a glycine by a peptide linkage) and the carboxyl group of the glutamate side-chain. It is an antioxidant that protects vital cellular components from reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.

2 Thiol groups are reducing agents that present in mammalian cells at a concentration of about 5 mM. By acting as an electron donor, glutathione converts disulfide bonds produced inside cytoplasmic proteins to cysteines. During the process, glutathione is oxidized to glutathione disulfide (GSSG), commonly known as L(-)-glutathione.

3 Glutathione is almost exclusively found in its reduced form because glutathione reductase, the enzyme that converts it from its oxidized state, is constitutively active and inducible by oxidative stress. In fact, the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione within cells is frequently employed to assess cellular toxicity.
